Student Activities

East Leroy Choir The East Leroy Elementary Choir is directed by Mrs. Franklin and assisted by Mrs. Knowles. The Choir meets most Tuesdays and has 30-40 third through sixth graders. They have performances during the year including the Spring Concert, several performances for students in the elementary, and performances for Care Community. This fantastic program provides an added musical opportunity for students.

Before-School Tutoring Before-school tutoring is offered from 7:45-8:15 at East Leroy Elementary. Students receive extra help in math under the direction of Title I Coordinator, Colleen Swank. Mary Longman and Pam Waldron are the parapros that assist with this worthwhile program. Parents must provide transportation in the morning to enable students to take advantage of this tutoring.

Student Council The East Leroy Student Council consists of third and fourth graders who are selected by their teachers. Mrs. Tenney is the Student Council Advisor and they do many worthwhile activities. One of those activities is ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Fundraising is done through the selling of pencils before school in the morning.

Safety Patrol The East Leroy Elementary Safety Patrol consists of responsible fourth graders under the direction of Mrs. Hulce. They help ensure that all students board the buses in a safe manner. These students work outside in all kinds of weather.

Room Patrol The East Leroy Room Patrol serves an important function. These fourth graders make sure that all students leave the building and board the buses before the buses are dismissed. The Room Patrol advisor is Mrs. Hulce.

Wee Deliver Mrs. Hulce also directs the East Leroy Elementary Post Office. This program allows students and staff to write and receive letters through our own mail service called "Wee Deliver". Wee Deliver encourages students to read and write.

After-School Storytelling Mrs. Morgan hosts an after-school storytelling program on Mondays beginning in January. This is an exciting opportunity for third and fourth grade students.

East Leroy Elementary Guidance News for the 2010-2011 School Year

We will focus on six character education words for the school year. They are based on what we call “Six Stars of Character,” to align with our Positive Behavior Support Team's STARS theme. We are using the same word for each month that we used last year.

Six Stas of Character for the 2010-2011 School Year
September --Trustworthiness
October --Respect
November & December --Responsibility
January & February --Fairness
March --Caring
April & May --Citizenship
The first letter of each word creates TERRIFIC! (TRRFCC)

I will see your child's class at least four times each year. We will talk about the Stars of Character, as well as cover bullying/teasing and how to handle potential situations. Sixth graders will start looking at possible careers as well.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
East Leroy Elementary staff is in the process of developing an exciting, new, character based system in the school called Positive Behavior Support. The definition of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is:

PBS is a proactive, team-based framework for creating and sustaining safe and effective schools. Emphasis is placed on prevention of problem behavior, development of pro-social skills, and the use of data-based problem solving for addressing existing behavior concerns. School-wide PBS increases the capacity of schools to educate all students utilizing research-based school-wide, classroom, and individualized interventions.

There is a committee working very hard to put this together. The staff gives input during regular staff meetings. This is what the STARS acronym stands for: We are STARS at East Leroy! Safe, Truthful, Appropriate, Respectful, and Staying on task!

Watch for more to come as we create this new, individualized and exciting project!

Consider Parent Connect
Parent Connect will open a window for you, to your child’s world at school! You can keep track of daily assignments and homework, projects, lunch charges, attendance, and more. Parent connect becomes more valuable as your child progresses through middle and high school. If you haven’t signed up for parent connect, please contact the office so we can mail you a simple form.

Bullying
Over the summer, I heard the Youth Violence Prevention Association Director, Catherine Bradshaw from Johns Hopkins University, speak about bullying. She was speaking at the U.S. Education Department of Bullying Summit. She talked about the results of recent research so I took notes in the hope of sharing some of the main points with everyone.

The following factors were observed: student environment, data from students, parents and staff (probably in the form of surveys), team based coordination activities, staff training, classroom lessons, and the duration of programming.

As it turns out, the results of anti-bullying programming are mixed at best! There were two solid factors worth making note of, however. One is that we should be committed to increased supervision in the typical “hot spots” where bullying tends to occur. The other is that whatever programming is put in place, a 3-5 year commitment to consistent programming is necessary in order to see any improvement.

Technology Management and How it Relates to Behavior
Here is a helpful website that addresses parenting as it relates to your child's technology use:
http://guardingkids.blogspot.com/2010/09/negotiating-technology-with-your-child.html
It gives ideas and examples of how to make the tough decisions that every parent makes about Facebook and other social websites. It offers questions to consider about what purpose this technology serves. If it serves your child's social needs, are there other avenues that could be pursued in order to serve the same need, for example, phone calls, or direct e-mails?
