Notice is hearby given to the electors of the Athens Area Schools, a public school district, that a vacancy on the board of education of this district exists with the resignation of Eric McClure.

Notice is further given that any elector of the Athens Area Schools may apply to the board of education for consideration to fill said vacancy on the board through the November 3, 2026. On the November election ballot, the vacated term will be up for election for the remaining two years of the term under regular election procedures.

Athens Area Schools Reveals New Mission, Vision, and Belief Statements

A Strategic Planning Team was formed to take a primary role in developing the strategic plan. The team, consisting of 35 parents/guardians, community members, board members, students, and staff members, were selected with input from the Board of Education and key community groups. The team participated in a retreat workshop as well as additional committee meetings to develop a mission statement, vision, beliefs, and strategic goals. During the retreat, the team reviewed and discussed relevant quantitative and qualitative data as essential elements in the formation of goals and objectives.

Community and Board Launch Five-Year Strategic Planning Process

The Board of Education recently partnered with a diverse group of community members to begin an important journey: the development of a comprehensive five-year strategic plan for the district.

This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to transparency, open communication, fiscal responsibility, and the continuous improvement of instruction for all students. By bringing multiple perspectives to the table early in the process, the district is working to ensure that future decisions are thoughtful, inclusive, and aligned with both educational best practices and community values.

Grant Awarded for New Buses

The Athens School District is pleased to share positive news with our community. The District has accepted a grant from the State of Michigan in the amount of $2,053,468 to support the purchase of five (5) new electric school buses (E-buses). This grant allows the District to replace aging buses without the need to pursue a bond for transportation purchases in the near future.
