Grant Awarded for New Buses
The Athens School District is pleased to share positive news with our community. The District has accepted a grant from the State of Michigan in the amount of $2,053,468 to support the purchase of five (5) new electric school buses (E-buses).
This grant allows the District to replace aging buses without the need to pursue a bond for transportation purchases in the near future. While electric buses represent newer technology, and it is reasonable to ask how they will perform over time, this decision by the Board of Education provides a clear and immediate benefit to our taxpayers. In addition, the District will retain a diesel fleet to support longer routes and serve as backup as needed.
By utilizing grant funding, the District avoids the out-of-pocket costs associated with a bond, as well as long-term interest expenses. Just as importantly, it preserves the District’s ability to use bonding capacity in the future for more urgent or critical needs.
We are excited to report that delivery of the new buses is anticipated this spring. The grant will also cover the cost of required charging stations, driver and maintenance training, and necessary electrical infrastructure upgrades. We appreciate the continued support of our community and look forward to sharing updates as this project moves forward.
Thank you for your ongoing trust in the Athens School District.
